The transformation of a solid silver bar into a thread as fine as a strand of silk is perhaps the most mesmerizing process in the Margjelo workshop. This journey from raw metal to "silver hair" is the foundation of every piece we create in Shkodra, requiring a combination of physical strength and extreme delicate touch. It begins with high-purity sterling silver, which is melted and cast into a thick rod. To reach the thinness required for our intricate designs, the artisan must pull the silver through a series of progressively smaller holes in a steel draw-plate. Each pass elongates the metal and reduces its diameter, a rhythmic and demanding task that tests the artisan’s patience. If the silver is pulled too quickly or without proper annealing (softening the metal through heat), the thread will snap, and the process must begin again.

Once the silver has reached the desired gauge—often thinner than a millimeter—the true "anatomy" of filigree begins to take shape. To create the characteristic textured look of our heritage pieces, two of these ultra-fine threads are tightly twisted together. This creates a "ribbed" or "rope-like" wire that provides both structural strength and a surface that brilliantly reflects light from multiple angles. This twisted wire is the building block of our internal patterns, allowing the artisan to bend and curve the metal into the complex spirals and rosettes that define the Shkodran style. It is this specific combination of two threads becoming one that gives the silver its unique "shimmer," a visual depth that a single, smooth wire simply cannot achieve.

Understanding the anatomy of the silver thread allows the wearer to appreciate the incredible density of labor in a single ring or pendant. A piece that fits in the palm of your hand may contain several meters of hand-drawn and hand-twisted wire, all meticulously placed and fused with a flame. This process is a testament to the resilience of the material and the mastery of the craftsman.
